How may I help you

After my recent conversation with step-daughter about her wish to find a job and save money and move out, she went out and actually got herself a job.  It’s only a two week job but you never know if it will lead to something more.  It might not seem like such a big deal.  She’s a teenager, she got a summer job.  These things happen.  But, the significant piece is that this is the first job that she’s ever gotten on her own.  Her last job her mom got for her and she was hired where her mom works.  She worked there for quite awhile before finally quitting when she was struggling.  In fact, this is the first thing she’s ever done by herself for herself.  She’s always had a parental unit doing things for her or protecting somehow.  While I realize that this isn’t the magic wand that will suddenly see step-daughter on a path of sunshine and roses, it is still quite significant that she was able to do this.  Now she finally has something that she can feel good about on her own and that’s the best start towards doing other things that will also help her to continue to feel good about herself.

Go, stepdaughter! Clearly that’s not a whole life solution, but I think you’re right, that really counts for something. Sometimes it’s those little pieces of personal control that give us the courage to take the next steps.

She’s really focused and actually working towards something right now. I’m hoping things start to fall into place for her before she gets frustrated and gives up.
